The redesigned 2018 Subaru Crosstrek and WRX are receiving Top Safety Pick+ honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
Making the Top Safety Pick list means both models score ‘Good’ in all five controlled IIHS crash tests. But crash tests alone aren’t enough anymore. The IIHS also now factors in front crash prevention and headlight scores to come up with the trim levels that meet the highest award level.
In this case, the Top Safety Pick+ honors apply to the Crosstrek and WRX trims equipped with the optional Subaru Eyesight system, a safety technology suite that we’re huge fans of here at Car Pro. The system includes the front crash prevention system which scores ‘Superior’ on both models.
Both the WRX and Crosstrek trims that make the Top Safety Pick+ list also come with ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Good’ headlights.
2018 WRXThe improved headlights on the WRX Limited trim help move it into TOP SAFETY PICK+ territory. The 2017 model fell short of top honors because its best-available headlights were marginal. While the Limited trim earns a ‘Good’ rating due to its high-beam assist and LED lights, the model’s base halogen lights don’t make the cut with a ‘Poor’ rating.
2018 CrosstrekThe LED headlights on the Crosstrek’s 2.0i Limited trim earn an ‘Acceptable’ rating when the vehicle is equipped with high-beam assist, a feature that automatically switches between high beams and low beams, depending on the presence of other vehicles. Note, that without high-beam assist, the LED headlights earn a ‘Marginal’ rating, and like the WRX, the base halogen lights earn a ‘Poor’ rating.
