Test Drive: 2014 Audi S5 Quattro Coupe Review

Everybody truly interested in beautifying our highways should buy an Audi S5. Visually, this is one car that everybody loves and gets a lot of stares. Looks however are just one attribute of my weekly review car, the 2014 Audi S5 Quattro coupe.

The S5 is the faster version of the A5, and it is available in a convertible as well as a coupe. My tester is a 6-speed manual transmission and has a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that is putting out 333-horses, but feels like it has 375 or more. The acceleration of this car is smooth and determined, and the transmission shifts as smoothly as any car I have ever driven. It is truly effortless. Audi’s awesome Quattro all-wheel drive system enables the car to handle great and aids in the acceleration power.

Audi is known for exceptional interiors, and the S5 does not disappoint. The whole interior is understated and elegant. The seats are super-comfortable and are a combination of leather and Alcantara. This car has a terrific cloth suede headliner that surrounds the huge sliding sunroof. Standard equipment abounds in the S5, with beautiful LED lights that have become a trademark of Audis, it has a terrific 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel that has multifunction controls, heated power seats, electronic climate control, Bluetooth, and a great sound system. If you often use a back seat, this car may not be for you, it’s awfully cramped back there, but front seat passengers will have a lot of room.

One new feature on the 2014 is the Audi Drive Select, which is also standard. With the optional Audi Drive Select, you can influence individual vehicle components at the push of a button and so change the character of the car. The efficiency mode improves consumption values. As an integral part of Audi Drive Select, you can choose an energy-efficient operation. In every mode, the vehicle adjustments depend on the equipment present. Audi Drive Select interacts with engine, automatic transmission and steering. There are vast differences in the different modes depending on your mood.

Options on this model include Audi’s MMI system with navigation and rearview camera. Everything runs on a color monitor mounted in the center of the dash. My only complaint on the car is the operation of the sound system. It is difficult to master simple tasks like setting a preset channel. On the plus side, Audi Connect grants access to Google Local Search, Google Earth, 3D satellite imagery, news headlines, local fuel price updates, and Wi-Fi connectivity for up to eight passenger devices and more.

This car is a joy to drive and even at MSRP, it is an outstanding value.

What I liked most: Exterior looks, handling, and performance.

What I would change: The radio interface.

MSRP: Base price $52,000, as equipped $59,220.

Fuel Economy: EPA rated at 17 City/26 Highway.

Weight: 3850 pounds.

2014 Audi S5 in a few words: Outstanding value and a great sport coupe.

Warranty: 4 year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper with roadside assistance, and one year or 5000 miles of free maintenance.
