These Are The Most In-Demand Car Colors and What’s Next

What Car Colors Are Dazzling Drivers

If car color is important to you when shopping for your vehicle, you’re not alone. Researchers at automotive paint powerhouse PPG say 60 percent of consumers identified color as a major factor in their vehicle buying decisions.

North American Trends

According to PPG, in North America, achromatic colors remain the favorite exterior hues of choice. White is most popular (23 percent), followed by black (19 percent), gray (17 percent), and silver (15 percent).

In 2017, slightly more people chose black than the previous model year. Gray’s popularity went up, while fewer people opted for silver. White was the overwhelming favorite. Red and Blue took 5th and 6th place.

BASF Automotive Refinish is also keeping track of color trends. In its 2017 model-year report, it notes an increased demand for hues with shimmer and shine. Also, when it comes to electric vehicles, achromatic gray/silver colors are the most popular colors.

Orange hues are also making their mark, to the point that AARP even recently deemed orange the “hottest car color of 2018”.

AARP points out that it’s showing up on cars like the new BMW X2, Honda Fit, and of course muscle cars like the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Challenger. It’s also showing up on the new Nissan Kicks and 2019 Audi Q8. Still, we’d say the eye-popping color is generally a color you’ll see more on car shows than on the road.

As far as the future goes, BASF predicts achromatic colors will continue to reign supreme.

Both companies agree that the blue hue trend will also grow in popularity. Case in point, we’re seeing blues on the all-new 2019 Acura RDX and Ford is making Ford Performance Blue available on the 2019 Ford Raptor.
