Acura’s performance luxury sedan, the TLX, is entering the next generation for 2018 with some updates. The automaker rolled out the latest model at this year’s New York Auto Show going on now through April 23.
The TLX is currently Acura’s top seller, so even if sedans aren’t a red-hot market right now, they’re hugely important to the brand. The current TLX hasn’t seen an update since its arrival three years ago. Back then, its job was simply taking over for the retiring TL and TSX.
The new TLX follows suit with the upgrades to last year’s MDX crossover. In that, you can see design inspiration from the Precision concept. Ultimately, this means a more sporty and aggressive look. It starts with the front grille which features the new signature diamond-pentagon.
Other design upgrades include reworking the LED headlights. They now match the new grille instead of staying with a look that fit the old shield grille style. The grille also looks darker and it’s not as shiny. The back shows more kick with chrome on the bumper and reworked dual tailpipes.
The main cabin updates are technological. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. The infotainment system carries over the dual screen design. However, the brain gets gutted for a brand new system.
If you’re really wanting to go fancy, go for the A-Spec package option for V6 engine trims. It adds on 19-inch, versus standard 18-inch, black alloy wheels. The front fascia gets larger air intakes. The cabin also gets a thicker sports steering wheel.
Acura also touts the return of its NSX race program. The automaker announces its time for its return to the racing world to prove itself as a performance automaker. It hopes its return to the track will validate the capabilities of the new TLX.
“Performance is the future of our brand and to be a credible performance brand, you need a supercar, and you need to take that supercar racing,” says Jon Ikeda.
Powering the TLX Acura is carrying over the current generation. Therefore, your base option is still a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 206-horses. Upping to the V6 gets you a 3.5-liter with 290-horsepower.
The 2018 TLX is slated to go on sale at Acura dealerships nationwide in June.
