A redesigned Lexus ES is on the way and with it comes the popular sedan’s first-ever F SPORT trim.
The 7th-generation of the new ES is built on a new, lighter, front-wheel drive chassis. Lexus says it’s roomier, quieter and safer than the current generation and the automaker also promises sharpened performance.
Highlights are a new more powerful V6 along with a new 8-speed transmission, updated hybrid system, and the new F SPORT trim, along with the next generation of Lexus’ Safety Sense+ 2.0 system.
New V6 and 8-Speed Transmission
The gas version will carry an all-new 3.5-liter V6 under the hood good for 302-horses and 267 lb-ft of torque. Both of those numbers are up (+34 hp, +19 lb-ft) compared to the previous generation V6. Lexus credits the power boost to the new V6 being one of its most thermally efficient engines, which results in more power without increasing emissions.
The new 8-speed Direct Shift transmission uses an ultra-thin torque converter and a multi-plate lock up clutch to more efficiently transfer power to the front wheels. Lexus says it’s also tuned to deliver crisp, precisely timed shifts with quick responses. With a wider spread of ratios, the new eight-speed is able to utilize high torque gears on the low end for quick starts and tall gearing on the high end for optimum efficiency.
The ES will also be available as a hybrid. An updated hybrid system will offer a total output 215-horsepower and a preliminary fuel economy figure of 44 mpg in combined driving. Lexus also says it’ll drive better, too, and feel more like you’re driving a standard gas engine. A smaller battery also allows it to be mounted underneath the back seat so it doesn’t cut into trunk space.
ES 350 Design
The new ES sits lower to the ground and features a new fastback roofline. A longer wheelbase makes it roomier inside. The cabin features Matte Bamboo, Linear Dark Mocha, and Linear Espresso wood. There are three wheel designs to choose from: 17-inch wheels are standard with two 18-inch as options. Twelve color choices include two new hues: Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Sunlit Green. F SPORT models get an exclusive Ultra Sonic Blue Mica 2.0 color.
F Sport Trim
Along with the exclusive color, the ES 350 F SPORT model front end gets a blacked out pattern consisting of “L”-shaped clusters with corresponding cutouts at each corner of the fascia. It adds a rear spoiler, additional rear badging and a dark lower valance It comes with standard 19-inch wheels, with a similar design of those found on the LC Coupe.
In the cabin, you’ll find new, three-dimensional metallic trim and sports seats.
Performance-wise, F SPORT models also feature Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). AVS adds adjustable dampers at each corner that feature 650 levels of damping force for more control. It also features Sport+ mode, with an engine sound enhancement, that adjusts engine, transmission and suspension settings for maximum performance.
Lexus Safety System+ 2.0
The new Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 comes as standard equipment on all ES models. It adds new features including bicyclist detection. It’s part of the Pre-Collision System (PCS) which already detects an oncoming vehicle or pedestrian. PCS has also been enhanced to help better detect a pedestrian at night by increasing the radar’s sensitivity and dynamic range.
