I’m Laura Reynolds with CarProUSAGeneral Motors has announced a new standard feature for its EVs called Ultium Energy Recovery. Ultium Energy Recovery can help EVs charge and accelerate faster and drive further by repurposing waste energy from the battery. GM has developed a patented heat pump that recovers energy from the battery and uses it to power heating and propulsion while also conserving battery range. Ultium Energy Recovery can also capture and use humidity from both outside and inside the vehicle including body heat from the driver and passengers. It then uses this captured humidity to more quickly heat the cabin in cold weather at a rate even faster than a regular internal combustion engine. Since the Ultium’s recovery system provides help for heating and other functions the draw on the battery is reduced. This reduction can provide GM’s EVs with as much as 10 percent more range and by warming up the battery first it can charge faster.
