For sure, the microchip shortage is taking its toll on the auto industry, but given dismal car (sedans and hatchback) sales last August due to Covid-19 and the switch to SUVs, some cars actually advanced. The segment overall was down from last year to this year in the same month.
Remember, too, that August numbers do not include General Motors or Stellantis, although I doubt anything would change in the top 20 rankings. We’ll have a much better picture of things after the first of October when we see the 3rd quarter results from all automakers.
