BMW Confirms First X3 M Performance Model

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times, SUVs are all the rage right now. Perfect timing for BMW to unveil its all-new 2018 X3 along with a more powerful M Performance option.

The really big news is the new BMW X3 will get the M Performance treatment, in the form of the X3 M40i. The midsize SUV receives a bunch of performance enhancements including a beefier engine, M Sport brakes and M Sport exhaust system.

The X3 M40i carries a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line with 355-horsepower. BMW claims that makes it the fastest car in its segment with a 0-60 mph time of 4.6-seconds. It sends power to all four wheels with BMW’s xDrive AWD.

If you don’t go for the M, the X3 xDrive30i comes with a base 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo with 248-horsepower. It doesn’t quite offer the crazy gusto of the M, but that’s a bit more horsepower than the current model and it still hits zero-to 0-60 in a nice 6.0-seconds.

Both models channel power through 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The M tuning it sportier, but BMW says overall both are more fuel efficient and both keep a 50:50 weight balance.

What’s New

While the new X3 doesn’t look significantly different than the current generation, there are some notable changes BMW wants to highlight with some special infographics.

Notice the new larger three-dimensional kidney grille with active air shutters. There are new optional Adaptive LED and Icon Adaptive Full LED headlights.

If you look you’ll see a two-inch longer wheelbase, underbody cladding, and sloping roof spoiler with side aero blades.

Across the board, new features include a 75 percent larger heads-up display, 10-25 inch touchscreen with optional gesture control, and all-season run flat tires in either 18- or 19-inches. Other standard cabin features are 3-zone climate control, power adjusting side bolsters on the front seats, and reclining rear seats. On the M, M40i badging pops up all over the place including on the Sport seat backs.

Also, for the first time in BMW SUV history, you can get the factory to install a 2-inch trailer hitch.

The new X3 is being built in Spartanburg, South Carolina at the largest BMW production plant. It also produces the X4, X5, and X6.
