Car Pro Show Dealer Sends Mustang Into Outer Space – Car Pro News

mustang in spaceIt took 50 years, but the Ford Mustang has finally made it into outer space.
All it took was a weather balloon, a few people with a crazy idea, and America’s beloved Ford Mustang.
“We wanted to celebrate 50 years of Mustang and the impending arrival of the all-new 2015 Mustang by doing something really special,” said Michael Sego, Ford’s San Francisco-area sales manager. “Mustang has always been about getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road, but we decided to take to the open sky.”
Sego teamed with Steve Kubitz, the managing partner of Big Valley Ford in Stockton, California, and a Car Pro Show dealer affiliate, along with several other Mustang fans with their heads in the clouds.
Spoiler alert: this wasn’t quite a 1:1 scale ‘Stang. The team attached a Revell Mustang model kit to a rod, which was then connected to a high altitude weather balloon.
Equipped with a GPS tracking unit, the Mustang soared 110,000 feet (approximately 21 miles) into the air during the 74-minute flight.
“More than 9 million Mustangs have been built in the past 50 years, going to virtually every part of the planet,” said Sego. “We’re excited to have been able to take our favorite car to new heights by launching it into space.”
In the video, you’ll see that the descent wasn’t exactly uneventful. The red Mustang model started spinning wildly and, at one point, it looked like the car might come unglued from its perch.
Can this be considered the first muscle car donut in space? Or perhaps tiny aliens decided to hop onboard and take the 2015 Mustang for a quick spin?
Let the conspiracy theories begin!
