VW Debuts Near-Production Ready Atlas Cross Sport Concept

Volkswagen is feeling pretty good about itself right now when it comes to finally designing SUVs that Americans actually want. More than half of its sales came from the Tiguan and Atlas in February. And VW wants nothing more than to continue the trend with the VW Atlas Cross Sport Concept.

VW unveiled the 5-seater sibling to the larger Atlas this week at the New York Auto Show. The near-production ready concept features a two-row grille as opposed to the Atlas’ three-bars. Its grille crossbars are also illuminated in white and operate as LED DRLs to further differentiate the two.

The Atlas Cross Sport will be built on VW’s MQB platform and the Atlas wheelbase, but the concept is 7.5 inches shorter.

The concept features a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with 355-horsepower and an estimated 26 miles of all-electric range. The PHEV concept can be driven in any of five modes: ‘E-Mode’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘GTE,’ ‘Off-road’ or ‘Battery Hold / Battery Charge’.

VW says a more conventional mild hybrid system would deliver 310-horses and come with “Snow,’ ‘Sport,’ ‘On-road’ or ‘Off-road’ driving modes.

The concept’s cabin comes with 12.3-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.

Look for a production version to head into production in 2019. It will be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee alongside the seven-passenger Atlas.
