Chrysler/Cummins Partnership Turns 25 – Car Pro News

Chrysler CumminsChrysler Group’s Ram truck division is celebrating its 25-year association with Cummins, maker of heavy-duty diesels that once were best known for their use in semi-tractor rigs.
Few marriages could remain this strong on their silver anniversary. Ram says 85% of its heavy-duty pickups are ordered with Cummins diesel engines.
“Ram and Cummins are names synonymous with power, quality and durability. We’ve enjoyed a successful relationship and remained leaders in the diesel pickup market for 25 years,” said Reid Bigland, CEO of Ram, in a statement.
The Dodge Ram 3500 with the 5.9-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine of 1989 produced 160 horsepower and 400 pounds-feet of torque. Today’s 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel available in the Ram 2500 and 3500, and Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis-cab configuration, develops up to 385-horsepower and 850 pounds-feet of torque.
Nissan has said its full remake of the big Titan pickup, due this year, will offer a 5-liter Cummins V-8 diesel in 2015, rated at least 300-horses and 420 lb-ft. of torque.
