In the words of Classic Chevrolet owner Tom Durant at the 6th Annual Charity Check Presentation, “I never thought it would turn into what it is. It has become something that really makes a difference.”
He was, of course, referring to the milestone $2.5 million dollars raised for local charities in just 6 years spearheaded by The Steve Thompson Classic Charity Golf Tournament named in honor of the late Steve Thompson of The Thompson Group at Classic.
Since 2012 Classic Chevrolet employees have put on a charity golf tournament to raise money for local non-profits benefitting children in need, families facing challenges, orphans, the homeless, veterans and the disabled. A special committee formed by the employees of Classic Chevrolet chooses the charities and spends the entire year raising donations and planning the annual tournament.
Every employee of Classic Chevrolet and The Thompson Group at Classic personally donates money through a payroll deduction program.
On November 22, 2017, the ceremony to distribute checks to now 14 local charities was held during a holiday luncheon attended by employees, charity representatives, sponsors and invited guests. The 2017 Steve Thompson Classic has raised another $200,000 again matched dollar for dollar by Tom and Susan Durant for a total of $400,000 bringing the total donations raised since 2012 to $2.5 million.
The 14 charities include 6 Stones Mission Network, The Angel Fund of Trinity High School, RISE, GRACE, Food for the Soul, V.A.S.T., Community Storehouse, Neuro Assistance, Clubhouse for Special Needs, Miracle League, Unite for the Troops, Chari-T-2000, Heroes on the Water and Finding Me Global Academy.
Tim Lynch, commercial manager for The Thompson Group at Classic and chairman of this year’s Classic charity committee addressed the crowd, “These fourteen charities represent our community. They make us better people, they make us a better community, they make us a better dealership. After all, what they do is simply help people. As a dealership, that is also our goal, not just to sell something but instead to help someone. Together we can make a dynamic difference.”
