Lexus is taking driving on ice to a whole new level, literally. It’s crafted the world’s first set of working wheels and tires made from solid ice.
The automaker commissioned a team of U.K. ice sculpture specialists to create them. And just because they could, they added an actual in-wheel LED light for effect. Then they fitted them to a Lexus NX for a ride like none other.
It took three months to research, design and make the tires and wheels using techniques like laser-scanning and three-dimensional computer-aided design. As you might imagine, it wasn’t an easy feat. There were two big challenges. They had to recreate the Lexus five-twin-spoke alloy wheel and its Yokohama winter tire with incredible precision. At the same time, they also had to making sure it would support the NX’s weight.
The car itself had to stay cold in order for this whole thing to work. You can’t have the car melting all that hard work, after all. To make sure that didn’t happen, Lexus stored the NX in a deep-freeze for five days at -30 degrees celsius before taking it out and driving it down a London road.
Oh and Lexus notes that even through it was in a deep-freeze, the engine started right away.
Check out the pretty amazing feat below.
