Cruze Diesel Rated at 46 MPG – Car Pro News

Cruze DieselGeneral Motors Co. says the new diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze gets 46 miles per gallon on the highway, making it more efficient than some hybrids.
GM announced the U.S. EPA’s fuel economy numbers for the diesel Cruze Wednesday.
At 46 mpg, the diesel Cruze matches the highway fuel economy of the Toyota Prius C subcompact. But the regular Prius hybrid still does better, at 48 mpg.
The Cruze beats its closest competitor, the diesel Volkswagen Jetta, which gets 42 mpg on the highway.
The diesel Cruze goes on sale next month in Baltimore, Milwaukee and other markets where diesels are popular. It arrives in the rest of the U.S. and Canada this fall.
It starts at $25,695. That’s $7,755 more than the base price on a gas-powered Cruze.

Another example of Detroit brilliance – exactly how many miles do you need to drive the Cruze Diesel at 46 mpg to save $7,755 in fuel to make up for the premium price charged for the diesel engine?

It’s simple math. The answer is too many to make it worth the purchase.

(Public disclosure: I am the owner of a 2001 VW Golf GSL TDI diesel that gets 55 mpg at 70-75 mph.)

Thanks for writing Skip, your comments are valid when it comes to just the fuel cost equation. If you factor in this engine will hopefully go 350,000 miles without any major issues, the overall cost gets a lot closer to being equal.

I really appreciate you listening to the show!
