Well if you haven’t seen it yet, get ready to be glued to your computer screen for a few minutes. Dashcam video of Dover Delaware Police Department Officer Jeff Davis lip-syncing to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” is taking the internet by storm this week.
But before you think officers just happened upon the footage while reviewing dashcam tapes, think again. The Dover Police Department actually planned and shot the video as part of its social media outreach and we have to say, it worked. The video, showing the 19 year department veteran cruising and grooving to Swift’s song, went viral when it hit the web and even got the attention of Taylor Swift herself.
So just how did Officer Davis know all the lyrics? Well, turns out he has a 10-year-old daughter who’s a Taylor Swift fan. Davis says while all the attention is unexpected, it’s not unwelcome.
“It’s crazy and overwhelming to me,” Davis said. “It was fun thing, a nice thing to do with everything that’s going on with police. With all the negative publicity it’s nice to show a positive side of police. I think people are liking the fact of seeing police in a different view.”
Dover Police Cpl. Mark Hoffman says the whole idea behind producing and releasing the video was to humanize police officers.
“People tend to look at us as robots with uniforms and gun belts so we wanted to a show a lighter side of our force,” Hoffman said. “I think it’s important for people to see police in that light.”
The video’s had more than 20 million hits on Youtube. Check it out for yourself below.
