Dodge Doubles 2016 Hellcat Output, Cancels Remaining 2015 Orders

Unless you’ve been under a rock, for oh, say the past six months, you know Dodge’s Challenger and Charger Hellcats are selling like hotcakes. To meet demand, the automaker is upping production of the 2016 Hellcat models and canceling unfulfilled orders for remaining 2015 models.

Yes, you read that right. It’s canceling around 900 Hellcat orders still on the books, and to make up for it, buyers will receive special pricing on the new model. Dodge will also be making a lot more of the 707-hp beasts this go round.

“We could not have asked for a more enthusiastic response to the Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats, it was absolutely unprecedented, but then again, these 707-horsepower muscle cars are unprecedented. To meet this demand, we are more than doubling our SRT Hellcat production for 2016 and simplifying the process to make it easier for our enthusiasts to get their hands on the hottest muscle cars in history. In addition, customers with verified sold orders that weren’t built in the 2015 model year will receive special discounted pricing if they re-order in 2016,” says Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO, Dodge and SRT brands, FCA U.S.

Buyers who don’t get their 2015 Hellcat will receiving a special voucher they can use to get the more expensive 2016 model at the 2015 pricing. However, ultimate pricing will be decided between the customer and the dealer. Dodge will also be personally calling each driver with a canceled 2015 order beginning on July 27th.

“For the 2016 model year, we’re starting fresh,” Kuniskis tells Automotive News. He adds that canceling customers orders, “is probably not what they want to hear, but we’re going to do it so that we have a fresh, clean slate going forward with everything that we learned in 2015.”

Dodge will also be using new ordering system to make sure that the right number of Hellcats are allocated to the right dealerships. (You’ll remember that dealerships sold more Hellcats than the automaker could handle this year.) Here’s how things will work this time. Dealerships will be able to order half of their allocated Hellcats at the beginning of August, and that allotted amount is based on sales performance. Then each dealership will be reevaluated and given a second allocation in February 2016.

Both the Challenger and the Charger are being offered in 2016 SRT Hellcat models. The Challenger SRT Hellcat is the fastest and most powerful muscle car ever with the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat V8 engine that produces 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. The Charger SRT Hellcat features the same 6.2-engine and delivers a top speed of 204 miles per hour. For 2016, both models are receiving new standard features that include ultra-premium Laguna Leather on the interior and Uconnect 8.4AN with navigation.

Dodge will start producing the 2016 Hellcats in September.
