It was only a few years ago that the world got its first eight-speed transmission. So it was only a matter of time before we would see nine.
A nine-speed automatic transmission will be demonstrated next week at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show by Land Rover. The famous British brand, now owned by India’s Tata Motors, says the new transmission is a world first.
The goal is greater fuel efficiency, in this case, by increasing the number of speeds in this particular transmission from six to nine. Higher gears mean lower engine speeds.
Best of all for Land Rover, it says the new transmission from supplier ZF lends itself well to the brand’s off-road capability. It will be made by ZF in South Carolina.
