GM Sticks With Kid Rock And His Confederate Flag

General Motors will still sponsor the Kid Rock summer tour, despite the performer’s support of the Confederate flag, the company confirmed.

Kid Rock’s Chevrolet-sponsored summer tour has not yet featured a display of the flag, GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said.

“The only flag on stage during the Chevy-sponsored summer concert tour is the American flag, and to our knowledge, Kid Rock has not used the Confederate flag on stage for several years,” he said.

A Kid Rock representative declined to comment.

The automaker has not set any specific ground rules on Kid Rock’s use of the Confederate flag, Morrissey said.

Chevrolet representatives plan to meet with the Detroit chapter of activist group National Action Network later this week to discuss the group’s misgivings about Kid Rock’s support of the flag.

Morrissey added that GM does not have plans at this time to discuss the issue with Kid Rock.

“He does not use the flag in this concert series and hasn’t for about five years, maybe even ten years … there is no planned conversation with Kid Rock or his team,” he said.

Controversy surrounding the flag reached a boiling point after the symbol of the Confederacy incited protests following a mass shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., last month.

Since then, Kid Rock has shown ardent support of the Confederate flag, saying during a Fox News interview last week, “Please tell the people who are protesting to kiss my [expletive] … ask me some questions.”

The performer, born Robert Ritchie, is a Michigan native who lives in suburban Detroit. He was recognized by the Detroit branch of the NAACP in 2011 and told the audience at the time that he has never flown the Confederate flag with hate.

“We are committed to our sponsorship of Kid Rock’s summer tour and are confident that he will provide his fans, many of whom are proud Chevrolet owners, with a spectacular concert experience that celebrates American freedom,” Morrissey said.
