How do you hoist a 3,800-pound car into a sixth-floor penthouse apartment on a congested city block?
Very carefully, as the old saying goes.
Chevrolet is showing off its new 2014 Impala in San Diego this week and it found the perfect gimmick to wow reporters. As if the breathtaking bay views aren’t enough from a penthouse where Chevy held an introductory dinner, there sat the point of the whole exercise, a new blue Impala.
The wealthy architect and car collector who let Chevrolet borrow the place for a few nights sounded like he was fine with the idea of having a car occupying what appeared to have been his open-air dining room.
The car went airborne last Saturday thanks to a crane, drawing a crowd of locals to watch the spectacle. Spokesman Chad Lyons, who witnessed the flying car, says there were no attempts to remove the powertrain or otherwise lighten it for the journey.
If it was a headache to drop it in the penthouse, we can only imagine what it’s going to take to get it out.
