Out with the beige and in with the polka dots. That’s Kia’s way of saying that it’s still focusing on creating cars that attract a stylish younger crowd.
Case in point, its Super Bowl 50 commercial that will air Sunday, February 7th. It stars actor Christopher Walken and promotes Kia’s #AddPizzaz media campaign.
The spot is cheekily named “Walken Closet” and compares the 2016 Kia Optima to a fun pair of polka dot socks. Walken says in the spot, “There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who are content to blend in … then there are those who expect more. They’re exciting. They have pizzazz.” Personally, our favorite line is, “It’s like the world’s most exciting pair of socks, but it’s a midsize sedan.”
The 2016 Optima “socks” it to you with a starting price of $21,990. It gets an estimated mpg of 25 city and 37 highway. Power for the base LX model comes from a 1.6-liter Turbocharged engine paired to 7 Dual-Clutch Transmission. The SX and SX Limited trims offer a 2.0-liter Turbo engine.
Part of Kia’s plan to reach out to younger buyers also includes a new addition the the lineup. To that end, the automaker is expected to release its first sports sedan next year. It’s based off the ‘Nova’ concept that was revealed at at the Seoul Motor Show last April.
It will reportedly offer 2.0-, 2.2-, and 3.0-liter engine options. It is also assumed that it will be Kia’s second car with rear-wheel-drive. The concept model is smaller than Kia’s sister company Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe. This means that it will be the first compact sport sedan for either company.
The sports sedan is running under the codename ‘CK.’ It is set to begin production in May of 2017.
Until then, find yourself some ‘pizzaz’ socks and get ready to enjoy the Big Game ads this weekend.
