Yes! Mazda is finally ready to give the people what they want – and that’s the MX-5 RF!
The sweet, slick two-door retractable fastback is simply drop-dead gorgeous. We’ve thought so ever since the roadster made its surprise debut earlier this year at the New York Auto Show. Instead of a normal hardtop, this one lifts up and back and is stored underneath a back plate, similar to a Porsche Targa top. (Technically speaking, the term Targa first appeared on the 1972 Porsche 911T Targa and the word remains a registered trademark of Porsche.)
The first one to the party is the MX-5 RF Launch Edition. Mazda will only send 1,000 of them stateside and they’re destined for Mazda’a most loyal customers, to start off with anyway.
The Launch Edition, based on the Grand Touring trim, features an exclusive Machine Gray Metallic paint color that just wows from every angle. Inside, you find Nappa leather interior trim with a hand-painted black roof panel. The Launch Edition has one engine choice – the SKYACTIV-MT. Each roadster will be made to order with your choice of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
Here’s how the ordering process will go. Mazda will open up Launch Edition preorders first to a select group of customers. They’ll be a specific window of time to order one, then it opens to the public.
Now if you miss out on one a Launch Edition, Mazda doesn’t want you to feel totally left out. Other MX-5 RF’s will join the lineup, they just won’t be quite as exclusive as the Launch Edition in the special Machine Gray color.
The 2017 MX-5 RF models will arrive as either Grand Touring or Club trim levels. They’re expected sometime in the first quarter of 2017.
Specific timing for MX-5 RF Launch Edition ordering, as well as pricing info, will be announced in the coming weeks.
