Mercedes Confirms 10 Hybrids By 2017

mercedes hybridMercedes-Benz executives confirmed plans to launch 10 new hybrid plug-in models by 2017.

Following the launch event for the S500 plug-in hybrid, Mercedes-Benz development chief Dr. Thomas Weber promised the company is set to maintain an average of one new plug-in hybrid model arriving on the market every four months.

“The S-Class forms the spearhead of a true plug-in hybrid offensive for Mercedes,” he said, as quoted by CarAdvice.

The executive noted that the expanded lineup will include plug-in variants across the C, E, and S-Class car lineup, along with several SUV models.

The plug-in S500 integrates an 8.7 kWh battery pack that provides up to 20 miles of electric range, before the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 kicks in to help out. When used together, the electric motor and gasoline engine produce 436-horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.

The powertrain expansion takes advantage of modular components, allowing the S500’s hybrid system to be utilized for any of the company’s rear-wheel-drive or 4Matic models paired with four or six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The company has also hinted that it is working on a plug-in system suitable for its front-wheel-drive vehicles.

Weber earlier this year suggested the C-Class may be the next model to add a plug-in option. The latest report pens the E-Class and next-generation GLK further down the list.
