National Automobile Dealers Association President Peter Welch is asking dealerships across the U.S. to donate $1,000 each to NADA’s Emergency Relief Fund and is hoping to raise $2 million total for dealership employees affected by the floods in Louisiana.

An NADA statement said an estimated 1,200 employees from 60 dealerships and their families have been displaced by flooding and require immediate financial assistance. NADA’s Emergency Relief Fund can give up to $1,500 to an impacted family.

On Monday, Welch and Car Pro Show dealer affiliate, Annette Sykora, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation, arrived in Baton Rouge, La. The two are talking to dealership employees to assess how much financial aid is needed.

“At NADA, we view our dealerships as one big family. When a member of our family hurts, we all hurt,” Welch said in the statement. “We call on auto dealers across America to help raise funds to help families through the NADA Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund.”

Sykora said that financial assistance from NADA will be needed for months and that the floods are “the worst natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy.”

She added: “Now that the flood waters have receded, the real work of rebuilding begins”.
