NHTSA Investigates Smart ForTwo Engine Fires

NHTSA Investigates Smart ForTwo Engine Fires

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into eight complaints of Smart ForTwo engine fires. The investigation involves 2008-2009 models, but according to NHTSA documents, the fires occurred in 2015 and 2016.

Six owners report smoke, an unusual noise, and a check engine light before pulling over and seeing a fire in the engine compartment. The other two instances occurred when the 2-door cars were stopped. All owners say flames quickly engulfed their cars. Mercedes-Benz, who builds Smart cars, says it’s not aware of any injuries.

The preliminary evaluation could lead the way to a formal recall down the road once the NHTSA determines the cause, scope and frequency of the alleged defect.

Customers with concerns should call Mercedes-Benz at (800) 367-6372.
