Say hello to Nissan’s new 5.6-liter Endurance V8 gas engine. It’ll be a new engine option in the all-new 2016 TITAN and TITAN XD full-size pickups come next spring. So if you’re eyeing a TITAN, you’ll have a decision to make.
The 2016 TITAN XD Diesel is already winning awards. So this new engine choice will just add another feather to the truck’s cap. The all-new V8 is good for 390 horsepower and 5,800 rpm and 401 pound-feet of torque and 4,000 rpm.
The TITAN XD Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel just went on sale this month, but you’ll have to wait for the 5.6L gas model. It’ll hit the road in early spring.
“It’s going to be a tough decision for TITAN XD customers between these two very durable, capable engines,” says Rich Miller, the chief product specialist for the TITAN.
While the new Endurance V8 shares its displacement with the Titan’s previous-generation V8, that’s where the similarities end. The new engine offers an additional 73 horsepower and more torque. It also gets Nissan’s advanced Variable Valve Event & Lift technology. It combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response. Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake with a throttle valve, and valve timing and opening with non-variable camshafts.
Direct Injection Gas technology also sets it apart from its predecessor. It provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance versus a non-direct-injection system. It does this by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. A new piston design gives a an 11.2:1 compression ratio, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance (the previous Titan had a 9.8:1 ratio.). A Multi-Control Valve also helps manage the engine’s thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.
2016 TITAN XD models equipped with the Endurance V8 engine will be outfitted with a new 7-speed automatic, which features Adaptive Shift Control and Downshift Rev Matching. We expect pricing information closer to the sale date.
