OnStar Will Help You Rent Your Car – Car Pro News

General Motors is entering the car sharing business with a twist: Its OnStar connectivity system could make renting out your car, or renting some other driver’s car, easier.
GM is participating in RelayRides, in which drivers can rent out their own vehicles to strangers when they aren’t using them to earn up to a few hundred dollars a month, and like other car sharing services like Zipcar, the service is intended as a great way for city dwellers to stay mobile without owning a car.
So here comes the OnStar component. RelayRides’ renters will be able to reserve an OnStar-equipped car using their mobile phones. They then use their phones to unlock a car’s door. GM says RelayRides is the first third-party developer to integrate with GM OnStar’s proprietary application program interface that will be available to other developers later this summer.
While other makers offer the ability to reserve cars with smartphones, GM says it is different because owners won’t have to install a separate device. OnStar is already in their GM cars.
“General Motors, through OnStar, and RelayRides have joined forces to create an entirely new mobility solution for U.S. drivers interested in more affordable, sustainable and collaborative automobile options,” said Nick Pudar, a OnStar vice president.
