President Obama Sneaks a Drive in a Volt – Car Pro News

Everyone knows that the president has many powers. He is, after all, the leader of the free world, but with all that authority, he doesn’t get to drive.
This week, however, President Obama revealed what he termed a “secret,” that he recently got behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Volt, the controversial extended-range electric car, for a drive.
It happened on the grounds of the White House, he revealed to Jay Leno in an interview on NBC’s Tonight Show. To hear Obama tell it, the Secret Service sounds none too happy about the experience.
Obama says he was visited by a friend who had a Volt and “he said, ‘Why don’t you take it for a spin?’ ‘”
No wonder the President was curious: The plug-in car is rated at 38 miles of electric driving before its gas motor kicks in. He had gotten in the car at events and posed with it for photos, but not driven it. Plus, it’s a car that’s certainly been in the news. Radio commentator Rush Limbaugh and other Republicans have criticized the Volt, particularly since its maker, General Motors, received a government bailout to stay in business.
“I was really getting into it,” Obama says, after he took the car for a spin around the White House grounds. He says the Secret Service got wise and made sure the gates were shut so he couldn’t get out on the streets of Washington.
“That was my big joy ride. Three times around the South Lawn driveway,” Obama joked. “It was wild.”
