When you drive a BMW, you know you are going to be driving one of the best engineered, best driving and handling cars in the world. When you go to the M-Series in the 3,4,5,6, X5, or X6-it goes to a higher level. I had the 435i last year and liked it, but this M4 is a totally different car.
Starting under the hood, M4 comes with an inline 6-cylinder with twin turbos that push this big coupe to 425-horses. My tester has a 6-speed manual, but it comes in a 7-speed automatic also. I love the manual in this car, it gives you complete control of this beast. The sound coming from the exhaust is exhilarating under full power.
The Ultimate Driving Machine is not just an ad line, this car fits the description perfectly. Handing is incredible and can be configured to your liking using the adaptive M suspension, which electronically controls shock absorbers constantly to adjust to road conditions as well as driving style within milliseconds, guaranteeing optimal road contact in every situation, the best possible traction and even more agile handling.
The suspension settings can be adjusted from comfortable to sporty-dynamic via the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes.
Comfort mode ensures comfortable handling during everyday driving, and also increases safety in case sudden swerving is necessary. In Sport mode, ample comfort is maintained, but dampening is reduced and contact with the road is more direct – ideal for country roads and uneven racecourses. Sport+ mode offers minimal dampening and maximum driving dynamics on level roads and racetracks. It is truly like driving three different cars. Steering is magnificent!
The M4 coupe has a beautiful exterior, starting with the gorgeous front fascia, to the side air vents, the bulge in the hood, the outstanding 19” wheels, to the sculpted rear end, this is a head-turner. My review car is Mineral White, which has a touch of pearl and is outstanding. It has a complete carbon fiber roof that adds to the overall beauty of the M4 coupe.
This car is extremely wide, which makes for a roomy interior. Front seats are large and extremely comfortable. You can actually put two adults in the back seat, unusual for a coupe. The dash is well laid out; a heads-up display makes seeing your speed really easy. This one has white leather seating and an abundance of aluminum, not carbon fiber like most luxury cars. Navigation and rear camera work great.
Like most cars, there are things you can complain about. The seat belts do not attach to the front seats, so it is tough to reach them. It is nice for getting people in and out, but could become burdensome for the front occupants. Like most coupes, you have a bit of a blind spot as you glance over your right shoulder. That is easily remedied with blind spot monitoring, which this car does not have.
Given the looks, ride, drive, and handling of this car, it is hard to say it is overpriced. However, it has a lot of options that run the price up by $18,000. There is a $4000 Executive Package that includes things that in my opinion should be standard. Lighting package is $1900, ceramic brakes will set you back a whopping $8150, M Suspension is $1000, the wheels are an extra $1200, and the sound system is $875. The enhanced Bluetooth is $500. For $83,000, I sort of expect cooled seats, a moon roof, remote start, and blind spot monitoring.
Make no mistake, this is a magnificent car. It is a driver’s car. I just wish it was priced lower.
