Mercedes-Benz is recalling 5,100 2016 Smart ForTwo models to fix an issue with the parking brake.
The parking brake may not hold because of a loose lock nut that connects the cable to the parking brake handle, which creates a rollaway risk. You can check out the government recall document here.
Mercedes launched its investigation into the matter back in 2016 based on one field report from outside the U.S. and after finishing its investigation this summer decided a potential safety risk could not be ruled out.
Owners will be notified beginning in early September. Dealers will replace the parking brake cable lock nut for free.
Owners can call Smart at 877-496-3691, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov to check their VIN to learn more.
