Somebody out there really loves Steve McQueen, not to mention Porsche. A 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo once owned by the star was sold at the Mecum Auctions event in Monterey this past weekend for a staggering $1.95 million. It was McQueen’s last special order Porsche and with his personalized license plate MCQN930.
Porsche 930’s were popular during the ‘70s and ‘80s, and this one was equipped with a non-intercooled 3-liter engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, producing 234 horsepower. McQueen’s affinity for the fast lane was seen in the extra add-ons
It was delivered with seven-inch front and eight-inch rear wide wheels, but McQueen updated them to eight-inch and nine-inch, respectively, in his ongoing quest for speed. To help him achieve it, he had a kill switch installed for the taillights in case he was chased by the cops while racing along Los Angeles’ Mullholland Drive, according to his son Chad. He also added the slick black sports seats.
The car has traded Hollywood hands for years, including film director and producer Floyd Mutrux and actor Dean Paul Martin.
A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit McQueen’s alma mater, The Boys Republic, a reform school in Chino, California.
