Subaru sales are on fire right now and now STI, Subaru’s performance line, is serving up special 2018 WRX and BRZ models.
The all-wheel-drive 2018 WRX STI Type RA comes with a power boost under the hood. The rear-wheel-drive BRZ tS won’t get more juice but will come with notable chassis and appearance changes.
Both models will go on sale next year but Subaru will only build 500 each of them. We’ll have to wait for pricing until later this year, but here’s what we know for now.
2018 WRX STI Type RA
Or really just Type-A.
The model is heading to Nürburgring later to make an attempt at setting a new speed record. Knock on wood, but by the end of the summer, that attempt could be a success. Quick alphabet soup lesson, the RA in the name stands for “Record Attempt”.
The Type RA improves the power of the WRX’s 2.5-liter turbocharged Boxer with STI cold-air intakes and a high flow exhaust system, tweaking to the third gear of the 6-speed transmission, and updates on the suspension and engine.
Horsepower estimates rate it 310, which is a good 42-horses more than the standard model.
It also loses weight with an STI carbon fiber pedestal wing and roof, BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels and no spare tire. Subaru says the weight reduction gives it faster acceleration but it’s not dropping numbers yet.
STI handling updates include Bilstein dampers and a silver Brembo braking system with monoblock six front and dual rear piston calipers.
2018 BRZ tS
The BRZ tS won’t get a power boost but plenty of other enhancements to give it special edition status.
STI tuning includes front and rear SACHS dampers, coil springs, and V-braces.
The unique tS is also the first BRZ with 18-inch wheels. The lightweight wheels improve performance along with Brembo brakes, an STI carbon fiber manually adjusting rear spoiler, and front, side, and rear under spoilers.
The front fog lights are ditched for STI light covers.
Black leather and Alcantara upholstery make up the majority of the cabin. Subaru makes it pop with red contrast stitching on the steering wheel, door and dash panels, shifter, and emergency brake. Further red accents are red leather front seat bolsters and belts and tS logo seatback embroidery,
Both models come in three color choices: Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica, and Chrystal White Pearl.
All three colors look great with Cherry Blossom Red accents on the front grilles and rear bumper covers. Badges, roof shark antennas, and side mirrors are black.
