Well someone out there will soon have the keys to the very first Tesla S Convertible in the world. A California design company just sold its first production model on Ebay Thursday, with the winning bid coming in at $100,000. The asking price had been $125,000.
The company behind it, other than of course, Tesla, is Newport Convertible Engineering, a company known for its convertible conversions. Back in April of 2014, NCE started talking about its plans to develop a Tesla S convertible and it released several computer-generated images of its design. At the time, it also said it had a Chinese investor lined up to buy 100 of them. No word on if that is still the case, but we do know they’ve built at least one of them, the one that sold Thursday.
According to a news story on ABC 7 News, turning the Model S into a convertible wasn’t that difficult. NCE’s CEO and lead engineer Al Zadeh said the Tesla is a well-built vehicle which made it a little easier to customize the car.
“Tesla was actually a very, very good challenge being one of our very first electric vehicles, but I think I did a pretty good job overall at the end,” he said.
The company plans to make more, and any Tesla S owner can opt for the conversion which runs $29,000. You just simply send it over to NCE and let them do what they do best. If your not a fan of soft-tops, Newport Convertible Engineering is now developing a creating a Tesla hard-top coupe, but it will cost you a bit more, coming in at $49,000. So something for everyone.
