For a lot of years, I chose my Top Five vehicles I drove during the year. It was a daunting task to whittle the list down to five, and I always felt like I left some great cars off the list. Like last year, I will not limit myself to a number, but rather share with you the vehicles I liked most by category.
So, with that, here we go! By segment, these are the vehicles I liked most based on initial quality, overall value within the segment, overall driving enjoyment, resale value, and performance. These are not ranked in order of my preference, and all these reviews are on the website.
I spent a week with the all-new 2018 Toyota Camry, which was spectacular, although this list is not ranked, Camry is at or near the very top. Toyota did a super job, and I think when the smoke clears for 2017 sales, it will be the #1 selling car in America for the 15th straight year.
Also re-done and very enjoyable was the Buick LaCrosse, Buick’s flagship sedan. It was one of the quietest inside I drove all year. The car I enjoyed driving the most was the new Lincoln Continental, and it was a visibly beautiful luxury sedan.
Last but not least, the BMW 530i was a fantastic car and BMW priced it right.
This is always the toughest category for me because there are so many great entries. Chevrolet had two home runs this year with the redesigned Traverse and Equinox. I really enjoyed both of them greatly and recommend both depending on a listeners size needs.
I pretty much loved everything about the new Range Rover Velar, especially the interior. It is a really nice SUV. If you are in the market for a 3 row SUV with lots of room inside and a fantastic price, check out the new Volkswagen Atlas, it is wonderful.
Of course, this list would not be complete without the new 707-horse Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk I just had. There is just nothing out there that compares.
In midsized pickups, I really enjoyed the 2018 GMC Canyon Duramax diesel, it is a great truck that gets great mileage and has terrific towing capacity.
In larger diesels, I had the all-new, all-aluminum 2017 Ford F250 Super Duty Powerstroke diesel, just an amazing truck if you need a truck to tow or haul heavy loads.
I was blessed to have had some spectacular supercars and ultra-luxury cars this year. They were all incredible if you can afford a vehicle in this price range.
The new Lexus LC 500 barely topped the $100,000 mark but was just a blast to drive and a visibly beautiful car. The Rolls-Royce Dawn Drophead coupe was nothing short of amazing, I had the Bentley Bentayga SUV that had the most incredible interior I’ve ever seen.
In the super-fast car category, I spent a week with the McLaren 570GT and also the Aston Martin DB11, two incredibly fast cars. Finally, my most expensive review, the new Maserati Levante SUV. I loved the performance and interior of the vehicle and went and got myself a new Maserati Quattroporte sedan.
