As if Volkswagen’s Golf lineup didn’t already impress, the automaker is now confirming production of the range-topping 400 horsepower Golf R400. Yes, think of it as a super-Golf. VW first debuted the concept vehicle at the Beijing Motor Show last year. The production model could keep the R400 name or potentially become the R420.
“We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R400 – we will do this car,” development head Heinz-Jakob Neusser told Car.
The Golf R400 be the first VW to get the high-output 2.0-litre turbo engine that you see in Audi’s TT420 concept. And it will be packed with power. Expect it to churn out 400 to 415 horsepower and at least 331 pound-feet of torque, delivered to a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system via a six-speed manual or dual-clutch DSG gearbox. With those figures, this hot hatch will reach 62 mph from a standstill in a mere 3.9 seconds. Oh, and the concept car’s top speed was 174 mph. We’ll have to wait and see if the production version ends up with the same figure. VW will also beef up the brakes to handle all that power.
Design tweaks include a front splitter, redesigned bumpers, a trunk-mounted spoiler and a rear air diffuser. Both three- and five-door body styles have been mentioned, with sport seats for the front passengers.
The super hatch is likely to make its debut in September at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show and be on the road by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, according to Car, VW is preparing a couple of other Golf GTI concepts that it could show off in May.
One is the GTI Club Sport and other is a full-scale version of the next Vision Gran Turismo car called the GTI Supersport, with a turbocharged VR6, 503 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque.
