What do you get when you pit a sports car against a drone on the track? The coolest race ever if you ask us and we have Nissan to thank for it.
The automaker’s unveiled a drone that’s so fast, it can keep up with the new 2017 Nissan GT-R. In fact, it accelerates faster than the GT-R. The drone tops out at 115 mph and can hit 0 to 62 in 1.3 seconds. That’s faster than the GT-R’s 2.9 seconds time. The GT-R wins in the mph department though. It’s top speed is 196 mph.
The automaker recently took the GT-R sports car and the drone to a 1.2-mile course at Silverstone in the UK and filmed the matchup. The race pits Nissan NISMO driver Ricardo Sanchez against the 2015 British National Drone Racing champion.
All we can say is wow. Check out how both machines take the corners. It’s nothing short of impressive.
In case you have any ideas to try something like this yourself, we don’t advise it. In fact, we’re just going to flat out say don’t do it. This isn’t an ordinary drone you can get your hands on. It’s a FPV (First Person View) racing drone built for this type of thing.
The GT-R model was custom designed by World Drone Prix Champions and Tornado XBlades Racing. It uses four propellers, 2000kV XNova motors and a race specification Sky-Hero quadcopter frame. The drone’s speed comes from a special custom design that keeps drag to a minimum. So there’s a lot going on here.
Oh and if you hadn’t figured it out yet, Nissan built the drone to keep up with the GT-R during filming.
